[Hotel Review] Zurich Marriott Hotel

This was the first hotel of my trip and it wasn’t a difficult decision to pick this spot as there were limited Bonvoy properties in the city. Plus, the rooms had undergone a refurbishment and based on pics, the new rooms looked quite nice.

Address – Neumuehlequai 42, Zurich, Switzerland, 8006. Website.

Location – a spot along the Limmat River, walking distance to Altstadt Old Town, the shopping streets at Bahnhofstrasse, and Lake Zurich. This location meant a scenic though unsheltered walk to the city’s very charming (in my opinion) neighborhood through a park or not, and access to the train system which takes you to the neighboring towns of Zermatt, Lucern, or even Lugano which I went. After orienting myself a little, I realized this hotel is so central that I did not have to Uber anywhere during my stay.

Price – CHF347 per night = CHF1,063 booked for a Deluxe Room, Main Building, under the Member Rate Pre-pay. Definitely not cheap but no one ever said Switzerland was a cheap tourist spot haha. I reached out prior to arrival to request to be upgraded to the Superior Room which is the renovated one and was told it will be subject to availability.

Pre-arrival – there was only a rather generic pre-arrival email sent 4 days prior. But I did proactively reach out prior to request for pre-payment of my stay as well as arrange for airport pick up due to my early arrival (7:30am in ZRH).

Getting There – I arranged for the airport pick up at an eye watering 150CHF as I had an early arrival and considering the cost of an Uber at CHF40-50, the 100CHF was used as an investment that the property will give me my room on arrival haha. The driver and swanky car was waiting for me at the arrival hall and in no time I was on my way.

Check In – I arrived to an empty lobby and was immediately attended to and processed super quickly. I was told my room was ready at 8am so yay to Marriott hospitality!

I was also given a choice of welcome gift as well as the M Club timings on the key card sleeve.

Room – I saw on the app a day prior that I had been accorded the Superior Room as requested – yay. If you prefer convenience, it is also useful to note that all renovated rooms are located in a different wing, the north wing. This means you have to change lifts on level 4, cross over the walkway connecting the 2 wings, before taking another lift to your room. The refurbed ambience is worth the small inconvenience for me though.

The superior room sized at 29SqM is spacious for 1pax and what a difference it is from its former life based on pics! The cheery colors and modern furnishing worked well to represent the ‘modern Marriott’ image if that’s what the Bonvoy group had in mind.

The door opens up to the wardrobe and mini bar to the right.

The main bedroom space has a nice king bed + ottoman, a chillax sofa, a single seater with coffee table, and big TV to spend the nights on. Everything was spotless – I love renovated rooms!

The bathroom feels brand new too and has a single sink + open concept toilet with a separate shower space – all good! Toiletries are thisworks brand which many Marriotts now have.

Also useful to note that the hotel does not stock one-time use of bathroom amenities on arrival so you have to request for anything you need.

In this space are notices and glasses encouraging drinking water to be had from the tap – swiss apls water on free flow!

Later that afternoon, a box of pralines was delivered which was nice. It is rare to be able to put some faces to the hospitality so I thought this was a warm touch.

Turndown service here is the usual placing of slippers by the bedside + folded bedsheet, plus some chocolate easter eggs as I was staying over Easter day.

M Club – this space is located at the lobby level through a door which is most of the times not staffed so access is sort of based on an honor basis where you just use your keycard to enter.

The space is quite nice and cosy sized – in the same bright cheery colors as the room and reminds me very much of Marriott Amsterdam I must say. There’s a balance of proper dining tables as well as loungey setup which I prefer as a solo, with the F&B nook set up in one corner.

Breakfast (7:00-11:00am [until 12:00pm Sat-Sun])

The breakfast spread here is very moderate as expected from a M Club in non-Asian countries but more than sufficient to start the day with – eggs, sausages, bacon, cold cuts, cheese, carbs, salads, cereals, and not-too-bad coffee. Very decent tasting too!

(Bonvoy elites do not get breakfast at the main restaurant by default)

Snacks (11:am-10:00pm)

I only tried one session of this and was pleasantly surprised that they had actual desserts on offer apart from the usual snacks and nuts. Not too bad!

Hors’d oeuvres (5:30-7:30pm)

This was once again my favorite session even though it has limited hot proteins with alot of carbs…

but otherwise there was plenty of cheese, cold cuts, salads every night with a rotation of different items which was thoughtful. On Easter day itself, they even had token chocolate easter eggs on the menu.

Drinks wise, there was 1x beer on tap, 1x white, and 1x red alongside a fridge of cold drinks. Not complaining when it comes with status!

Facilities – There is no pool on property, but I managed to check out the gym on my arrival day which was adequately equipped for a routine workout. I was happy that the modest gym had individually packed sanitizing wipes, and interestingly glucose gel sachets which I’ve never seen at any hotel gyms before.

The same floor also offers a mixed sauna and what seems like a relaxation room of sorts, but it was not staffed so it felt a little weird to use them I thought.

Service – service was good throughout, with particular mention to Lara from front desk and Kenita from Echo Restaurant who went above and beyond their duties to ensure I had a comfortable stay. No complaints here for sure!

Check Out – departed early from the property and no issues with checking out.

In Summary,

A great Bonvoy choice for Zurich and will definitely stay here again if I ever come back to the city 🙂
