Had the chance to stay here for 4 nights on work and was quite excited to actually experience this Wing as the only other Shangri-La Singapore was at Valley Wing during COVID times (I miss those COVID prices!).
Address – 22 Orange Grove Road, Singapore 258350. Website.
Contact – E-mail: singapore@shangri-la.com / Tel: +65 67373644.
Location – Nestled in the far-flung corner of Orchard Road, the property unfortunately does not offer any immediate proximity convenience other than a 15-min unsheltered walk to the main roads. If you don’t prefer to walk in the Singapore heat, there is a hotel shuttle service daily at 11am, 12pm, 1pm, 2pm, 3pm and 4pm (from Shangri-La Apartments, Shangri-La Singapore, Wisma Atria taxi stand to Takashimaya drop-off point, back the same way).
Price – It was a company event but a dummy searched pulled up a rate of about $400++ per night which in my opinion is quite high. But no complaints here!
Check In – check in for both the Garden and Tower Wing happens at the main lobby and its been so long since I’ve stepped foot here. This lobby has maintained its ‘grandeur’ vibe and the modern designs of the renovations completed in 2017 has aged well.
The area was a busy spot at 2pm – I was trying to beat the crowd in case the room can be early but no such luck. Check in was quick and there was no issue linking my Golden Circle account with the booking – I was able to see the stay showed up as an existing reservation on my app thereafter.
My room was not ready and given a voucher for a welcome drink at the Lobby Lounge to wait out which I thought was quite thoughtful. However, the actual redemption of the drink was less than ideal – the staff saw I was redeeming the voucher and said they are full and there’s waiting list for seats and offered a takeaway option so I sat in one of the random chairs in the lobby to nurse my bottle of sparkling water. However, I can’t help but notice that seats in the lounge that was empty when I asked remained empty throughout so I can’t help but think I was turned away because I wasn’t a paying customer at least in terms of drinks. Oh wells.
Room was eventually ready at 3:30pm which I was very glad for!
Room – My Tower Wing, Deluxe Room (38SqM), 1722, was a good space for 1pax but it felt smaller than the advertised size due to it angular layout. No biggie as I was only 1pax especially when the room was very well maintained for its age.
The room starts with the cupboard, luggage space, and see-through wardrobe to the right – I found the see-through design very interesting but wished they had soft closing door as they slam rather loudly.
The bathroom is opposite this spot and is a rather conventional bathroom with a single sink, open concept toilet, standing shower space, and a bathtub (yay). Toiletries here are travel sized L’Occitane ones which is a rare sight these days!
The bedroom space is an odd-shaped layout but enough for a king bed + TV, a huge work desk, and even a single lounge chair. I actually liked very much the muted grey theme, especially when everything was well maintained which I really liked. I had a peek at the Garden Wing rooms which had an old resorty feel which I don’t really like. Phew.
The mini bar is integrated into the TV Console but
It was also thoughtful that they included a separate dressing table for those important face stuff.
Welcome snacks were placed in the room and surprisingly replaced every day.
I later also found out that the Shangri-La app has a “Service Request” section which allows guests to request for housekeeping stuff (eg extra amenities / toiletries), and other assistance – and responded to efficiently. Either I suaku or this is a new function?
Along the same line, the app now offers a digital key which worked well in the instances I tried.
Breakfast @ The Line – breakfast is served from 6:00am – 10:30am and the spot is (I think) known more for its quantity than quality. I was there most mornings around 630am and it was super peaceful, with the crowds streaming in at 8am-ish.
And indeed the variety each morning is crazy big, with enough to feed most palates and most people. I did not find any of the quality top-notch though but sufficient to start the day with.
Facilities – Didn’t use but hopped by the pool and the gym which is shared between all 3 wings – pool is samey samey and the gym is actually bigger than I thought and probably more than enough equipment to suit all workout types, including a manual treadmill.
Service – Other than the welcome drink incident, I thought it was nice that the property actively reached out via watsapp and the chat was responsive on one occasion, but I was ignored on a second request. For a 5-star hotel, I thought the inconsistency was weird.
Check Out – Seamlessly completed at 11am on a weekday.
In Summary,
Happy to check off the Tower Wing for this work event but I wouldn’t actually do a paid stay myself here as I find the prices a little high for what’s on offer. But there are hardcore Shang fans out there so to each his/her own I guess.
