For some reason, there aren’t many reviews floating around for this Lounge, mostly about the Business sector if any. I was able to find a YouTube video about the space but in any case whatever I saw looked great and promising.

I arrived at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport about 3.5 hours prior to departure and excitedly hopped up the line for Etihad First Class – and there is it! No queue, no line! Brown carpet treatment here too, instead of red.

Check in was super efficient of course, and I was handed my First Class boarding pass in an emerald green folder, with the lounge invitation nestled inside.

Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport is a huge space so just watch out for the signs to Concourse D or follow the printed map, and you’ll find this super pretty entrance very easily. Business class passengers or Priority Pass guests are asked to use the Business Entrance which is a little further down.

I don’t think the staff was expecting many F passengers and my boarding pass was checked and validated, then brought to the seating area. I found the space to be very peaceful which is a nice change from the usual hustle and bustle of most Airport Lounges.

SEATING

I think I recall reading somewhere that this used to be Thai Airways’ First Class Lounge and the decor I thought was befitting of a First Class Lounge. Can’t really put my finger on what theme its supposed to be but its classy velvet-ish kind of set up with plush chairs and nicely spaced out seating.

I was also surprised to see a dedicated booth seat just for Etiad First Class passengers which I was ushered to – this dedicated table even had different cutleries (atas ones!) and I was later brought a welcome drink which was some sweet pink mocktail.

It was a very nice touch I thought but I also thought what happens if my flight’s First Cabin of 8pax is full? Figured it was first come first served so I parked myself there.

FOODAND DRINKS

I thought I read about the First section offering ala carte food but apparently not during my visit as I was told the hot food is shared with the Business section where a buffet is available. What a disappointing nerf as I was excited to try their ala carte offerings but ah wells.

BUT there was a dedicated area for simple snacks and drinks for convenience. Very pretty set up but nothing substantial to eat or drink here.

Otherwise, I had to head out to the Business section which was separated by a sliding door with no validation of cabin class required for in and outs. And the picture unfortunately had a cleaning trolley as it was there for a really long time and I did not have time to watch out for another clean opportunity. Not the nicest sight to ‘enter’ the First Class section for sure.

For hot food, I went over to the business side and checked out my lunch options – The food on offer were rather standard fares and tasted only okay.

There is a bar in the Business are where alcohol is available, but I tried the wines and didn’t like them so I decided to save my quota for drinks on board.

While in the area, I also took the chance to take a few shots of the Business seatings, bookmarking my next visit using Priority Pass. Still a very decent space actually, just understandably busier.

QUIET ROOMS

The First section is supposed to also offer the use of the Coral Chambers which is some Bed Experience by Omazz (website). I inquired at the reception but was told they no longer have that and instead, quiet rooms are offered in place. Another nerf, BOO.

To request for a room, you have to exchange your boarding pass for this card and the staff will bring you to the room – a no frills space though good enough for quick naps if need be I guess. I was told that this facility is offered at no cost to all passengers in the Lounge regardless of cabin class, and there is no limit to the amount of time you can occupy a room.

I wish the rooms had better colors though, as the current one feels rather dreary. I stayed a grand total of 5mins inside.

COMPLIMENTARY MASSAGE

All passengers in the lounge can request for a free 15-min massage by approaching the front desk – you’ll get this card and asked to leave this on your table. The masseur will ID you using this card and bring you to the room when it’s your turn. As a First passenger, the staff in the First Section approached me and introduced me to the masseur before she brought me to the massage area which made it feel more like a personal touch.

The massage area is a rather quiet spot in the lounge and actually a nicer set up than I imagine. Also surprised that there aren’t more passengers utilizing this as I didn’t have to wait long and the massage itself was actually a very competent shoulder and neck massage!

SERVICE

Now this is where it gets strange for a First Class lounge, even as a contract lounge.

Apart from the welcome drink and introduction to the masseur, there was no service at all apart from the occasional acknowledgement when I transit between the Business and First sections. No offer to being even coffee, tea, or water – everything is self-serviced. Soiled plates on my table remained uncleared throughout the entire 3 hours I was there.

Staff preferred to huddle around chitchatting most times I observed – very surprising from an Airport Lounge whose country is known for great hospitality.

I was also asked by different staff if I prefer to board first or last (first was my answer) and when it was boarding time, I went to the First section reception to confirm if there is escort to the gate and was told no. Perhaps it was my assumption that if there would be one if they inquired about my boarding preference ….

But then I am thinking, if there was no escort service, then perhaps they are better off not asking for boarding preference. And if there was indeed no such service, the least they could have done for a First Class passenger is to alert me to head to the gate when boarding is about to begin, since my preference is to board first. After all, its rather hard to miss me when I am the only person sitting in that booth seat.

If they are doing neither, then what’s the reason for asking?

In Summary,

a completely underwhelming First Class Lounge experience. I understand that access to the First section of the lounge can be purchased outright or upgraded with cash if already a Business section passenger, but with all the nerfs and underwhelming service, there is no reason why anyone should.
