I’ve dined at this SPG property in Singpore countless times and always loved how nice the property seems and how impeccable everything seems. The location itself (32nd floor lobby!), the not-crowded buffets (SPG points!), and seemingly romantic lobby lounge (where I get to order my fav avocado ice cream too). All these add up to a certain level of expectation for the rooms itself.
I almost managed to stay back in 2014 but some family thingy happened and we cancelled the staycation. Bummer.
Fast forward to this year, lucky me chanced upon their flash sale (see below) and booked for 1 night. Was super excited about it – finally!!
Address – 12 Marina View, Asia Square Tower 2, Singapore 018961. Website. Tel: +65 6922 6888 .
Price – $285++ for an Executive Sea View King Room (40-50 SqM) booked during their 3rd Anniversary Flash Sale in November = $335.44. Supposed a 30% off but anything below the 300 mark for their Executive level rooms are a good deal!
Location – Westin Singapore is primarily a business hotel and its location at Asia Square used to be ulu until the downtown line happened. I love that its lobby is on 32nd level though – special no? Nothing much around the area on weekends (other than the immediate Asia Square vicinity on Sat mornings) as most shops and F&B try to catch the weekday working crowds and rest on weekend when the crowd is at its thinnest. So I didn’t step out of the hotel at all during my 2D1N stay. Downtown station being 5mins walk away makes it easy to get around if you have to.
Prior To Arrival – a family thing happened AGAIN (its jinxed!) and I had to scramble to email room reservations to ask for info and potential options as I was going to have a 5-year old with me and children under 12 years old are not permitted to enter the club lounge at all times. Disappointedly, I was not offered any empathy nor options apart from being told again the the lounge strictly does not allow any children below 12 years old, and also that because of this, its better for us to have the breakfast at Seasonal Taste and it would cost us another $22.50++ for children 4 years and above. I was admittedly a little disappointed at the lack of empathy and efforts, especially when I’m an SPG Gold.
A few days prior to my stay, I received an email from a Westin Experience Specialist whose seemingly generic arrival email somehow managed to trigger my thoughts and I decided to reply to her summarizing my experience so far. To my surprise, she responded the next day and offered to waive my extra bed charges of $100++ should I still need it due to having the kid with me, and also that I could actually dine at the poolside beside the lounge (using plastic cutleries) if need be. Very grateful for that and it was the service recovery I needed.
Check In – I approached the SPG Gold and Platinum front desk around 12noon and was checked in promptly. I was thanked for being a SPG Gold (nice!) and I even forgot I had requested my room to be de-feathered. But the lady didn’t mention anything about the room upgrade to an ‘enhanced room’ until I asked – to which she replied that they are full but said that they have assigned me a nice room. Would have been nice if she had taken the initiative to tell me though. And again, I was not offered to be checked in at the Club Lounge 🙁 Why don’t most hotels follow through?
Room –My Executive Sea View King room was 4519 and possibly more 50SqM than 40SqM – super spacious and comes with a entry hallway that made it feel a little VIP. Yay. Everything was spotless. The bathroom was big in itself, the bathtub would have made for a nice chilling spot, and the white tea aloe toiletries was luxurious. The king bed was huge, so as the extra bed placed beside it. A velvety 2-seater sofa and work desk + chair completed the functionality of the room. A swivel TV, mini bar, nespresso machines – all nice touches. Kudos to the housekeeping team for making sure I have 3 sets of everthing (water, towels, amenities) too.
Executive Club – I am admittedly a little underwhelmed. Perhaps I had higher expectations, but the experience was just okay for me. Maybe it was affected by the fact that I had to be seated outside during cocktail hours, or that the lounge seems to be understaffed most times. The place, located on level 35, is not big but made up for it by having cosy chairs perfect for lounging in. Off hours, I saw unsalted nuts and cookies and choice of beverages including sparkling water. Cocktail hours saw cold cuts, meatballs in gravy, appetizers, salads, fruits, desserts and cheeses. Enough for a light dinner for us. Service was sporadically attentive, with them coming by to clear plates even when we were sitting outside. Midway through, they ran out of plastic cutleries (haha) and eventually we were allowed to use the normal ones but were cautioned not to break them. But they had champagne during breakfast (I snuck out without the kid)!
Breakfast – @ Seasonal Taste. Middling selection and quality I must say. The view was good though and it never felt too crowded. Egg station was swamped and the chef was getting grumpy at another who came to help – bicker out of eyeshot of your guests maybe? The brewed coffee offered was really bad and I had to get my fix at the lounge where it was freshly prepared from the coffee machine.
Other F&B – I ordered a wrap at Daily Treats to be consumed at the Lounge after check in and it was middling but suficient and rather generous portion.
Other Facilities – I checked out the steam room and jacuzzi both of which I didn’t manage to use but certainly looks nice. The gym was quite self sufficient too. I signed up for the free pilates class for in-house guests held (initially poolside but it was drizzling that day so venue was changed to the gym) every at at 4pm and there was only 2 guests including me, such a private class hehe. And of course, Westinworkout rocks! At SGD6.00 (USD5.00 equivalent), I had no excuse not to work my ass during the staycation. Although I looked like a frumpy potato every time I do it.
Service – Overall okay, nothing spectacular or memorable. I probably expected more as my first SPG Gold experience. Maybe it’s a business hotel so they pay more attention to business travellers. Don’t know.
Check Out – Fussfree and done at the lounge. I realized they waived the kid’s breakfast charge of $22.50++.
I mean, I still love this property for not being crowded ever. This is another check off my list for sure. But a rather underwhelming one. Oh well.
