I was stalking for staycation options for a weekend in September when Accor decided to have their bi-annual Private Sale! 40% off was really hard to resist and I’ve been wanting to try Grand Mercure Roxy Singapore, the only Mercure in Singapore. I’ve tried Mercures in Melbourne, Bangkok, Phuket, and Beijing – all not bad at all! And so it was booked for 26-27 September and we were all set!

Price – $229 ($195 + GST + Svc charge) for Junior Suite: up to 50SqM with separate living room.
Location – The location is honestly nothing to shout about and I would imagine really far for tourists to be able to do anything. But it’ll be excellent for an overnighter if you need to be at the airport to catch a flight thereafter as its close to ECP. The hotel is attached to a very old (isolated?) mall of sorts but nothing there, so skip. But it being opposite Parkway Parade and close to I12 Katong makes a huge difference to its somewhat ulu location – its all good now 🙂
Check In – Check in was quick and fuss free, but my pet peeve is not being checked in at Club Lounge when booked for Club rooms. To me, hotels that don’t that are skimping on little gestures that make guests feel special – whatever happened to the supposedly personalised check in?
Room – The Junior Suite (room 942) was niceee. There’s a microwave and little kitchen area which contains the mini bar as you enter, then the living room with sofa plus TV, then finally the bedroom! A huge kind bed facing another TV, and an enormous bathroom (and bathtub!). Toiletries are Mercure brand which I always feel are just okay, but nothing to complain about. Very clean 🙂 To be honest, I wouldn’t have picked this if it had’nt been refurbished but I was very pleasantly surprised by how it basically revamped the look and feel of the room. So modern now!
Club Lounge – The Club is located on the 17th floor – and not a big but adequate space. It was pretty empty when we visited in the afternoon for some coffee and cookies, but filled up quite quickly during cocktail hours from 6-8pm. I have to say the spread during the 2 hours were a bit disappointing: 3 hot dim sum dishes, veg sticks, cheeses, mooncakes(?!), macarons, finger sandwiches, and yoghurt in a mini fridge. Can do for bites but nothing outstanding. I had white wine and it was a nice glass. Didnt try anything else and was craving for fishball kway tiao soup by 9pm 🙁
Breakfast – we chose to have breakfast at Feast@East on the lobby level for the variety but boy was it a mad rush reaching at 9:30am and trying to be shown seats and getting food at the same time. Staff were obviously overwhelmed by the constant crowd. Sadly, both variety and quality were lacking and I was glad I didnt have to pay extra for it.

Others – We were given welcome drinks coupons redeemable at Breeze Bistro.Bar which is essentially their poolside F&B (was it level 5?). I was sooo happy that bubbles are an option too – ice minus-2-degree cold draft heineken by the poolside on a hot sweltering day. Ahhhh.
Service – They accommodated late check out until 4pm, which was a benefit of the club room. Service was nothing to complain about, and it was pleasant at the lounge at all times. We had left an item in the room and only remembered it 10mins after we left the hotel, and we turned back immediately. The concierge had someone accompany me back to the room to retrieve it – really appreciated much!

My first Mercure experience in Singapore – checked. A pleasant stay in all. I think it is working hard to fit itself to international Mercure standards after being rebranded / refurbished and I have to say they are doing a pretty decent job.
And as I write this, Accor’s Super Sale is on. Again. Shucks.
