[Hotel Review] Jen Singapore Tanglin by Shangri-La

This stay was purely functional – I needed to clock one night for my status match to Golden Circle Jade status as part of my newly acquired Krisflyer Elite Gold status. I’ve stayed at this property back in 2016 as well so that further muted excitement I could have.

Address – 1A Cuscaden Road Singapore 249617. Website.

Contact – Tel: +65 67382222 Email: singaporetanglin@hoteljen.com

Price – $144++ = $164 booked under the Book Early & Save with Flexibility promotion which supposedly grants up to 20% savings, with the rest of the benefits not so exciting.

Location – The property is located at the far end of Tanglin Road which was supposed to have direct sheltered access to Tanglin Mall – that inroad has now been closed temporarily due to ongoing renovations at the mall so you’ll have to walk around the building to get to the mall instead. Otherwise, anything else in Orchard Road is a quick stroll away.

Pre-arrival – No pre-arrival email but I did get a notiifcation on the Golden Circle app to complete an online check-in which I did.

Check In – I arrived to a rather empty lobby on a weekday at 2pm and was ushered to the self check in kiosk – but that didn’t work as the system only works for those who have NOT completed the online-check-in. e. The staff stationed there asked if I already knew my room number and said if I had done an online check-in I would have received an email with my room number – but I didn’t? So in the end, I had to go the front desk to get stuff sorted out. I feel the initiative was a little unnecessary as the front desk was empty in the first place. Ah wells.

Everything here other than your key cards are electronic via QR codes pasted on the front desks and also on your in-room TV:

Room – My Superior Room (25SqM), 1538, was exactly how I remembered – a neat squarish functional room with pops of youthful colors.

The brown blue color theme runs through the space, with the huge kind bed sitting in the middle of the room. Two bedside tables flank the bed, with powerpoints and lighting controls available. The headboard here is clean (yay!) and accompanied by cute lights and a wallpaper of swimming fishes which was quite quirky. This faces a non-swivel TV which does what it does.

Fitted at the window is a super comfy daybed with too many throw pillows than one can use. It is a nice spot to chill and (awkwardly) watch TV, eat your takeaways, and stare at the view of passing cars and façade of the Singapore Tourism Board building.

The WFHotel spot here is a high bar table with a high (but quite comfortable) chair, equipped with powerpoints and a desk lamp. A care kit of a hand sanitizer and 2x wet wipes are also placed here.

In another corner of the room is a cosy closet with a strangely low hanging rack and a bench for extra luggage space. The mini bar is also cozied up here, small but functional with bottled water, and a clean but empty fridge.

The bathroom space is also cosy but adequate – single sink with basic amenities and a standing shower space. Toiletries are their house brand which does what it does.

After suffering much trauma from hotels just out of SHN, I was very pleasantly surprised that cleanliness not an issue, the mini fridge is clean, the daybed is spotless. I also liked that there are plenty of (working) powerpoints fitted around the room – surely no one can have this much devices but more is better!

Facilities – I floated by the Fitness Centre and Pool on level 4 and found the Fitness Centre surprisingly big and very well equipped, and the pool giving a resort-y vibe with all the greenery surrounding it. Not much view here but hey, you get a view of Ah Hoi’s Kitchen in the evening.

Service – A special amenity was delivered by Jena which was fun – your phone will ring and you’ll hear an automated message to open the door. Otherwise, nothing to complain about in general.

Check Out – Completed efficiently at 12pm at the front desk.

In Summary,

A functional stay for me and it did what it did. Yays to Golden Circle Jade (soon)!
